Meet This Genius Music Producer & DJ From Istanbul With His Moving Groove
Estimated Time of Arrival — Issue #9 Consistency in good habits and fearless exploration of new adventures.
♥️ Read a newsletter, click the heart and all week you’ll have good luck ♥️
Ladies and babies,
Welcome to another issue of your fav Weds newsletter where we introduce the dopest, hottest artists from all over the Earth and ask them a bunch of uncomfortable q’ (some of which, already got us part-censored by office rats managing our guest artists...🙌 )
Our next guest is from Istanbul and even though he plays the “English is my second language” card often when he’s being cheeky, he’s been in New York since before I was legally allowed to drink and lemme tell ya, has a heart of gold.
We met mega randomly.
One fateful Saturday evening, feeling a bit down, I was strolling through McCarren Park with Snoop when I heard music in the distance. Like a rat charmed by the Pied Piper, I followed the sound only to stumble upon over a hundred people dancing their arses off to a small but powerful Dj setup.
I got a beer, took some photos and mingled until a cool chick told me what it was all about, and introduced me to our next guest. Their project Moving Company brings music and the best vibes to different random locations in New York.
Also, 85k monthly Spotify listeners are obsessed with his electronic music infused with soul, funk, and jazzy house beats. This is his latest release.
I’m delighted to introduce this Turkish legend, Atilla Ural, music producer extraordinaire (partly thanks to his OCD), incredible DJ and friend as my next guest at Estimated Time of Arrival.
The interview went something like this.
What bugs you about the world around you but feel we're not allowed to talk about?
Gen Z's.
I've noticed that some of my Gen Z friends act like experts on social media, even though they lack real-world experience. It's frustrating, especially in technical situations. They seem to jump into things without proper knowledge, relying on quick Tik-Tok videos and thinking they’re pro.
I’ve seen this lead to problems, like messing up during a live event. I get the whole "fake it till you make it" vibe, but social media takes it to another level.
“Open relationships”. What’s your experience with it? Thoughts on it? Or what have you observed in your circles?
Yeah, so I've never seen it work successfully.
But again, I'm older, maybe that's why I'm not seeing it, I'm not in those circles anymore. I've seen friends do it, very open friends and I feel like it always ends in big drama.
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
"Temporary Pleasures: Nightclub Architecture, Design, and Culture from the 1960s to Today" by John Leo Gillen.
It's a real gem, offering a deep dive into the nightclub scenes of London, Berlin, and New York. There are engaging Q&A sessions with Justin Strauss, a renowned figure in New York's party scene.
This book is a visual treat with stunning pictures and a wealth of information, including insights into the iconic New York loft parties and it costs around 30 bucks!
(It’s actually 66$ on Amazon)
What’s the secret to a happy-ish life?
Consistency in good habits and fearless exploration of new adventures.
What are your experiences and thoughts on psychedelics? And more specifically microdosing.
I have a good history with mushrooms. I love mushrooms, all kinds of mushrooms. I think it's way better than alcohol or anything.
They're really good for your immune system as well as, you know, your brain and all that stuff.
Me and my ex-girlfriend started doing tinctures with mushrooms. We were microdosing and it helped me cure my physical addiction to smoking…
Also, it can make you work and stuff too. I just don't do that anymore because it kind of upsets my stomach.
What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Most recently, with the Moving Company. We’d make a party somewhere and people were upset we kept changing the spot. They said it was bad, it would confuse the audience.
But we didn’t listen and every time it’s been amazing. Now people are like where’s the next new spot gonna be? (You can find out here)
I love getting advice from my friends it helps me see their perspective but that’s just someone else’s experience.
Describe the world today in 5 words or less.
Miracle, harmony, hyper-normalisation.
What’s the last film or series that moved you? And why? (It doesn’t have to be your favourite, just that made you feel something and what)
Triangle of Sadness, it's just so on. So uncomfortable in beautiful scenes. And the 180-degree change in the middle of the movie….
(That’s all we can say, if you haven’t yet it’s a must-watch!)
What are you working on right now? What do you have coming up? Where can people check out your work?
Okay, so my name is Atilla Ural and I release music with this name.
— I have a new record out with the Turkish diva, Sezen Aksu (5.5M monthly listeners). She's like Diana Ross of Turkey. It's called Ben Annemi Isterim, which means “I want my mother” and it’s a traditional song turned into electronic music… (Check it out it’s a BANGER!)
— I have a new studio with Deo Jorge from Hot Honey Sundays. We're in it right now.
— I have a party series with Andre Camara called Moving Company. We have a mobile rig, and we have good music, and we have guests that come in and stuff…
New York peeps! They’re playing this weekend with Smurfo, don’t miss out, I met some of the nicest people amongst their crowd and have become incredibly close friends… find our their party locations on this Whatsapp Group.
What artist/s do you love & wish them even more success in their field?
Dale, my partner, for sure.
City of the Sun (236k monthly listeners on Spotify!)
Thievery Corporation, a favourite group of mine (2.3M monthly listeners on Spotify)
The Flair (from Colombia)
Juan Pordios from Acido Pantera; I recently started working with, he’s an amazing producer, OMFG, he’s young but he taught me some stuff!
Rochee (28K monthly on Spotify!)
